Three sex industry insiders have shared their views of the impact of criminalising the purchase of sex in candid interviews with the BBC.
Eighty percent of the Northern Ireland public support proposals currently before Stormont which will criminalise the purchase of sexual services.
The new law is designed to curb demand for women trafficked into prostitution. But research has claimed a large majority of sex workers fear the proposal will put them at greater risk.

'Caroline'

'Caroline' advertises a full range of sexual services on a leading escort website. For part of the week she is based in Belfast, receiving between one and six clients a day, charging £90 for 30 minutes or £150 for a full hour. "I only work during the day. I'm not interested in people coming out of pubs drunk so I finish at 8pm." She said she has turned away clients that have wanted to take drugs while with her. Working independently, without a "booker" or pimp, and working alone from a rented flat means she is not breaking the law.
"I'm a law-abiding citizen." she said.

Financial hardship

Referring to the criminalisation of paying for sex, she added: "Even though I would not be a criminal, I would be associated with criminals. I'm actually turning people into criminals, and that I don't like."
The well-spoken 46-year-old English graduate first considered a career as an escort after experiences as a swinger. But she describes the financial hardship, caused by her ex-husband stopping child support payments, as the "catalyst" that propelled her into prostitution.
She plans to continue working for a couple more years, and is currently studying for two diplomas that will allow her to change careers.

Exit strategy

She said: "The idea is to clear some debts I got when I was a single parent.
"I have no regrets about doing this job. It's not something that I'm desperate to get out of, but I feel it's something I need to be single to do, and at my age, maybe it would be nice to be with somebody."
She enforces a minimum age limit of 23 and her clients come from both blue and white-collar professions. She says some have disabilities, and others lack social skills to make contact with women.
She also claims she has been visited by virgins aged from 24 to 40, as well as single men, and men in sexless relationships.
She said: "When you're being intimate with someone you're more likely to tell them something."
She said many clients confided personal and emotional secrets in her. "There is a lot of counselling involved in this job," she said.

A man charged with the killing of a prostitute in Gary, Indiana, has led police to the decomposing bodies of six other women in assorted abandoned homes in the city spurring speculation that he may be America’s latest serial killer with perhaps yet more murders to his name stretching back over decades.

So far Darren Deon Vann has been charged only with the murder of 19-year-old Afrika Hardy, a sex worker whose body was found at the weekend in a motel room in Hammond, just west of Gary and south of Chicago in neighbouring Illinois. He led police to the bodies of the six other women after being taken into custody.

“It could go back as far as 20 years based on some statements we have and that’s yet to be corroborated,” noted Hammond Police Chief John Doughty. “It is possible other victims could surface.” Of the other victims, three have been identified as Anith Jones, 35, Teiarra Batey, 28, and Christine Williams, 36, all from the surrounding area.

Investigators are combing through missing persons cases locally and in Texas in search of anything that could tie them to Mr Vann. He served five years in prison in Texas after being convicted of sexually assaulting and trying to strangle an Austin woman. He returned to Gary, where he had previously lived, after being released one year ago.

The capture of Mr Vann, 43, has gripped residents of Gary, a once-vibrant city on the southern end of Lake Michigan that over decades has become synonymous with rust-belt blight and violent crime. Residents expressed horror that its huge collection of abandoned structures had become a dumping ground for a suspected serial killer.

A CONNIVING call girl was behind bars tonight (Thursday) for blackmailing two of her punters over their secret trysts.

Amelia Horn had sex with both men - professionals from the North-East - before threatening to expose them.

The 24-year-old, from Stockton - who once appeared in a national newspaper, claiming to be a nymphomaniac - was jailed for two-and-a-half years.

An accomplice, Luke Burton, from Birmingham, was also locked up for two-and-a-half years for joining in the scam and also making menacing demands for cash.

At one point, 31-year-old Burton threatened one of the victims with a newspaper expose, claiming he had photographs of him and Horn having sex.

The pair - helped by Burton's ex-girlfriend Loretta Isaac - extracted £16,500 from the men because they were terrified their families would find out.

Police later recovered footage of the three celebrating after the first victim transferred £10,000 into Horn's account.

They were seen on film hugging each other before 24-year-old Isaac put her face up to the camera and yelled: "Blackmail, blackmail."
