British university students reveal why they have resorted to selling their bodies.

Financial desperation is not the only reasons British undergraduates are turning to prostitution, with some continuing to work in the sex industry after leaving university, students have revealed. Many students claim they resort to illicit sex industries as they have no other way of paying their way until graduation, with claims of girls offering sex to their landlord in lieu of rent.

But some are being drawn to it purely as a better paid option that bar tending or waiting tables, or even for pleasure and power kicks or the dream of being a "kept man" in one case, it has emerged. In a series of frank interviews current and former students who are on the game have told how and why they got into the seedy world and how it makes them feel.

The women and a man, who asked to remain anonymous spoke to http://www.vice.com after a research project revealed more than a fifth of students have thought about being involved in the sex industry and males were more likely to get involved than female counterparts.

A high-profile sex worker is set to take her fight against Northern Ireland’s imminent ban on prostitution to the courts. Laura Lee plans to launch an unprecedented challenge in a bid to overturn new legislation making it illegal to pay for sex in the region. Due to come into effect in June, the law will result in Northern Ireland being the only part of the UK where paying for the services of a prostitute could result in a criminal conviction.
More than 17,000 people here reportedly pay for sex each year.

Law graduate Ms Lee said she will launch her case at Belfast’s High Court after June and is prepared to take her fight all the way to the European courts in Strasbourg. She claims the law breaches European human rights and will put sex workers in danger by driving the industry further underground. Ms Lee told Belfast Live: “Sex workers have been denied their rights long enough. I witnessed first-hand what happened in 1993 when criminalisation came in in the South. Up until then we’d an amazing relationship with the guards. Then they had to go chasing clients and we were left vulnerable. We then had to move further back from police and the clients knew we were vulnerable. Decriminalisation is the way forward. Let’s be clear on this; in 2014 there were no arrests or convictions for sex trafficking in Northern Ireland. There were however 70 separate incidents of violence against sex workers and that’s only going to get worse. Sex work is the only job I can think of which compels a woman to work on her own and that has got to stop. More criminalisation will make it worse and that’s why I’ve decided to take this forward. It will be High Court first, then the Supreme Court and then we would be looking at Europe. I have my legal team assembled. We are not playing here.”

Paid-for consensual sex is currently legal in Northern Ireland, though activities such as kerb-crawling, brothel-keeping and pimping are illegal.
Ms Lee plans to pay for the legal action through crowd-funding and backing from sex worker support groups.

The new legislation, championed by DUP peer Lord Morrow, was passed last October – despite serious concerns being voiced by Justice Minister David Ford.

The ban on paying for sex was included in Lord Morrow’s human
trafficking bill which was passed in the Assembly. Last October, the anti-trafficking bill passed the Stormont Assembly by 81 votes to 10. That was despite a survey showing 98% of sex workers were against the changes. At the time Sinn Fein’s Caitriona Ruane said MLAs could show “this part of Ireland is not open for business for pimps”.

Lord Morrow insisted the new law was vital in tackling trafficking, arguing that outlawing payment would simplify legislation and send a message to offenders. Mr Ford insisted there was “100% agreement” between him and Lord Morrow regarding the need to tackle human trafficking. But he said he had concerns about the ability to properly police clause six – the ban on paying for sex. He voiced his fears after a report commissioned by his department said the introduction of such a law would be unlikely to act as a deterrent. The research also suggested 1% of those involved in the sex trade had been forced to join it.

During my last visit to Barcelona, I found that some brothels, agencies, etc have the ISO certificate for hygiene, health and quality standards. I've decided to go punting just to the places which hold this certificate, since I am concerned about having minimum quality standards.

I already know two places in Barcelona which hold this certificate, but I would appreciate any further information about more clubs around the world that have this certificate or some certificate alike.

A pair of newlyweds set up a prostitution racket in their own home and invited call girl pals to join it. Alexandru and Crintula Kis started the £130 an hour escorting service within days of tying the knot. The husband and wife team even shared their marital home in Hulme with two sex workers who flew in from Italy to join them in business, reports the Manchester Evening News .

The couple kitted out the property on New Lawrence House, Shawheath Close, with sex toys and advertised the women’s services online and arranged appointments by text. Up to 15 punters a day responded to the adverts, with one of the women earning £3,000 in just two weeks, Manchester Crown Court heard. The lucrative operation was only discovered by the police after one of the women fell out with Mr and Mrs Kis. The 26-year-old woman ran into the street, flagged down a passing patrol car and told officers the address she worked from, prompting a raid on the flat.

When officers searched the property they found the married couple at home with one of the sex workers, aged 22. Computers, mobile phones, a collection of lingerie and a device known as a ‘bodywand’ were found at the flat by police, prosecutor Rob Hall said.

Alexandru Kis, 34, and Crintula Kis, 21, went on to admit inciting prostitution. Mr Kis has previous convictions for rape and sexual assault in his native Romania. The pair rented the flat on August 20, and the women were seeing customers within a day of arrival from Italy. The address was raided on September 9, but evidence revealed the couple had been involved in the UK sex trade since February.

A former Wiltshire head teacher is reportedly under investigation amid allegations he used his work email to arrange to meet an escort dressed in a schoolgirl uniform. David Nicholson, principal of The Costello School in Basingstoke, Hampshire, said he is “mortified” by the claims and disputes them, the Sun newspaper reported.

The paper said Mr Nicholson, who took up his role at the school last year, sent a message to an escort saying: “I love this” when she suggested dressing up like a schoolgirl, later adding that he was “looking forward to putting u over my knee” (sic). The headmaster and Ofsted inspector, who describes himself as a husband and father on his Twitter account, then cancelled the meeting with the escort and her colleague, the paper said.

Carol Bode, head of the school’s governors, said she would be working with the board of governors to investigate and would take any action “deemed necessary”. She added that Mr Nicholson, who the paper reported has not been suspended, is seeking legal advice.

He said: “I’m mortified by the allegations. I am disputing them. Until I know the full details of what is alleged I can’t comment further.”

The majority of sex workers enjoy their job - why should we find that surprising? Selling sex is not inherently harmful or dangerous. Criminalising it would be.

Prevalent discourse would have you believe that sex workers are problems to deal with, or victims to ‘save’. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, when you ask sex workers about their job satisfaction and working conditions – as a study led by Leeds University just has – the majority of them are happy. When asked to describe their work, respondents typically selected positive or neutral words. 91 per cent of sex workers described their work as ‘flexible’, 66 per cent described it as ‘fun’ and over half find their job ‘rewarding’.

The headlines today have focused on the findings that the majority of the 240 sex workers who responded to the survey had worked in other jobs, particularly in social and healthcare professions, and were well-educated. But this came as no real surprise to other sex workers or experts in the field, who are well aware that the common view of sex workers is wrong.

But the findings of this study will no doubt prove to be unfathomable to the coalition of radical feminists and conservative Christians who have overlooked their deeply held differences to criminalise the purchase of sex in Northern Ireland, and who advocate for the introduction of similar laws for the rest of the UK. Their proposals are based on the so-called Swedish Model which criminalises the purchase of sex, based on a construction of sex work as gender-based violence against women.
