The majority of sex workers enjoy their job - why should we find that surprising? Selling sex is not inherently harmful or dangerous. Criminalising it would be.

Prevalent discourse would have you believe that sex workers are problems to deal with, or victims to ‘save’. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, when you ask sex workers about their job satisfaction and working conditions – as a study led by Leeds University just has – the majority of them are happy. When asked to describe their work, respondents typically selected positive or neutral words. 91 per cent of sex workers described their work as ‘flexible’, 66 per cent described it as ‘fun’ and over half find their job ‘rewarding’.

The headlines today have focused on the findings that the majority of the 240 sex workers who responded to the survey had worked in other jobs, particularly in social and healthcare professions, and were well-educated. But this came as no real surprise to other sex workers or experts in the field, who are well aware that the common view of sex workers is wrong.

But the findings of this study will no doubt prove to be unfathomable to the coalition of radical feminists and conservative Christians who have overlooked their deeply held differences to criminalise the purchase of sex in Northern Ireland, and who advocate for the introduction of similar laws for the rest of the UK. Their proposals are based on the so-called Swedish Model which criminalises the purchase of sex, based on a construction of sex work as gender-based violence against women.

The Mayor of Amsterdam has announced plans for a prostitution business run by prostitutes in a move designed to make safer the city's sex trade. In partnership with HVO-Querido, a non-profit that teaches sex workers business skills, the Dutch capital is looking for investor to buy five buildings in the notorious red light district — and rent them to entrepreneur prostitutes.

The buildings, acquired as part of a deal with sex industry mogul Charles Geertz, would provide 19 work spaces for about 50 prostitutes. HVO-Querido spokesman Jasper Karman said:"Sex workers have told us they want this. And it would provide a decent revenue for a third party." A father-of-three who almost decapitated a prostitute with a Stanley knife while recovering from a failed penis enlargement operation 'harboured thoughts of becoming serial killer'. Michael Wenham, of Uxbridge, phoned his wife and police to confess the killing of 25-year-old Karolina Nowikiewicz in February last year. The 36-year-old admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility but denied murder.

During the trial at Reading Crown Court, sordid details about Wenham’s private life and lurid sexual fantasies were revealed. He was found guilty of Miss Nowikiewicz's murder on Wednesday, following an eight-day trial.
A jury heard he had flown to the United States in 2013 for a £15,000 operation to enlarge his penis, but that it went wrong, leaving Wenham with a two inch smaller appendage.

Giving evidence during the trial, wife Dawn revealed her husband of eight years had taken her to a swingers party, fantasised over her having sex with larger-endowed men and had liked her to degrade and humiliate him over of the size of his penis while they got intimate.

Much of the evidence centred around Wenham's mental state at the time of the brutal attack, with psychologists for both the prosecution and defence debating whether the drugs he had taken following his botched operation could have led to homicidal tendencies. The court heard he carried out the attack after coming off drugs designed to suppress his sexual desires following his failed penis enlargement. During the trial it also emerged that Wenham had thoughts about becoming a serial killer, murdering radical Muslim cleric Anjem Choudhry, and, hours before attacking Miss Nowikiewicz, had emailed MI5 offering help in infiltrating terrorist networks. Wenham had purchased a Stanley knife used in the attack from Screwfix in West Drayton on the day of the attack.

Following the verdict, which was delivered on Wednesday (Jan 29) Miss Nowikiewicz’s family paid tribute to her. A statement said: "Karolina should be alive. She had the right to live, however someone, Michael Wenham, took that choice away from her. "Her death has brought great sorrow to her family."
